What is framed, ledged, and braced?
It refers to a traditional way of building strong and long lasting wooden gates or doors. They are framed with a strong outer framework that surrounds the panel giving them extra support and shape.
Ledges are the horizontal rails that are fixed horizontally across the door to keep the boards wind together. As in the image above, these doors also have diagonal timbers called braces to even out the weight and keep the doors strong.
Framed, ledged and braced construction is most commonly used in gates and other fencing solutions like, feather edge fence panels and timber post.Â
Framed Ledge & Brace Gate – nails or screws?
For a framed ledge and braced gate, screws are usually better than nails. This is because they provide a tighter grip and don’t loosen over time unlike nails. They provide a better resistance against bad weather conditions and they are also easier to be removed in case of any repairs needed.Â
As FLB gates are quite traditional, nails can be used to fasten up the process but we advised screws for better durability.Â
How to know if the ledge & brace gates are sturdy?
To have a sturdy ledge & brace gates depends on many factors like, quality of timber, framework, fixings used, supporting posts.Â
At City Fencing, we use pressure treated timber that is strong and weather resistant. We also use horizontal ledges that keep the framework tight and we use our galvanised or concrete screws to make the gates more durable.Â
We also use our range of posts to give the gates a better stability.Â
How to hang a framed ledged and braced door
For hanging the framed ledged and braced door, it’s important to follow the right steps. These include choosing the right timber or concrete post which should be placed in the ground with postmix or concrete. The hinges need to be placed evenly along the ledges. Mark the places where the screws will go and fix the hinges with the screws.Â
Lift the FLB gate inline with the post and fix the hinges to support the post. You need to check that it swings freely and doesn’t drag. Close it with a latch for security. At City Fencing, we provide installation services for the FLB doors to make sure they are correctly installed. Contact us today to know more.
